October Marathon March & Meet Anne Marie

California Tech Weeks + 30 days until NYC MARATHON

Q & A with Anne Marie Hagerty

Q: How did you learn about/get involved with Pitch and Run?

A: My former boss is besties with Nihal from their old college days, so I heard about it through the grapevine. My first time coming to PNR I was nervous because I thought I might need a pitch deck… instead I was met with good vibes, great people, and gratitude in the introduction circle – and immediately felt that I’d found an extremely special group of people.

Q: You quickly got heavily involved via running socials, what’s that been like and any learnings to share?

A: After becoming a regular, I fell in love with the heart of the PNR community and wanted to help spread the word so more people knew about it the extraordinary people in the group who are wildly impressive, but still work to help others, act in kindness, and encourage each other to be their best.

I’m a former TV journalist for CBS and thought I’d use my background as an interviewer to do running interviews with the people who make PNR so special, and then share their stories on social.

One learning is that it’s much easier to ask the questions than to answer them while running. ;)

Q: Tell us about your NYC ties/life/connections.

A: I never wanted to live in NYC – and now I’m obsessed.

In 2022, I was happily living around the world in a different country each month, but had a gut feeling I was supposed to move to NY. In March 2023, I listened to that intuition and flew from Buenos Aires to my now-home on Christopher Street, and haven’t looked back.

The city has contagious energy, and inspired me to launch my current company. When I’m not working on building, I lead my church dinner party weekly, love to go bachata dancing, do acro yoga, and of course, PNR.

Q: What are some favorite memories from Pitch and Run or favorite things you’ve gained from PnR?

A: Kicking off new runs and opportunities for the group like PNR x Miami Tech Week, London, and the first PNR ski trip!

First ever Pitch n Ski :ski

One of my favorite individual runs was a frigid winter day in NYC – rain and snow coming down, hardly anyone outside, ice all along the WSH – and we had a crew running and laughing hysterically.

Q: What’s something people might not expect to get from PNR?
Genuine care and community. I recommend you adopt a posture of how you can help or encourage first, and then you’ll be amazed how generous and kind people are with their time, talent, and treasure to help you in return.

Q: What do you do for work? Tell us about your company/role.

A: I am the founder of Alo Media and executive producer of The Envoy, a new docuseries coming to Amazon Prime in 2025: think Bourdain meets Blue Zones. Each episode highlights an extraordinary destination using food to sustainably share their culture with the world.

My business model started as a hypothesis about how to make media profitable (which even in the age of Netflix isn’t a given), inspired by POLITICO selling for $1B. I made a bet that if I could align interests between governments that have budget to spend on marketing, and world-class journalists who wanted to tell great stories but saw traditional media outlets dying, I could create a new media model.

I started by showing up at all the unsexy trade shows to land government sponsors, and it worked. Then I poached Emmy award-winning reporters from the legacy media outlets, built a strategic team, and The Envoy was born. This is our first show which aims to tell ethical stories that build a bridge between countries and cultures to make our world radically more ethical, equitable, and empathetic.

Fun fact: the story featured in our trailer video was discussed at length at the first every Pitch and Ski dinner! Shout out Alexa, Alex, Michelle, Slim, Nihal, Niko – from Park City to the moon… ;)

Q: What’s something that might surprise people about you?

A:

  • I’m an advanced nitrox scuba diver and love shark diving

  • I’m a classically trained pianist and played concerts in Japan

  • I grew up by corn fields around the rural south

Q: Are you training for any races?

A: NYC marathon!

Q: What are some favorites of yours in NYC? Could be anything, from vibes of people to neighborhood to coffee shop to something cultural?

A:

  • My friend Nina’s croissants @ Tall Poppy

  • Running toward the Freedom Tower

  • My friend Alex’s tuna rolls @ Sushi Counter

  • Walking Central Park with a coffee

  • My friend Chris’ tahini kaffa @ Balaboosta

  • Swing dance speakeasy in the sky

Q: What’s on deck for you in the rest of 2024?

A: Building our social impact arm for the company – we spotlight stories about sustainable agriculture, small business opportunity for women, and economic development in extraordinary places. My goal is to help the people we feature to grow, so we’re opening up to our first donors to support individual small businesses (farmers / restaurants / shops) starting in West Africa, the Amazon Rainforest and Southeast Asia. If you’re interested in helping with any EOY donations, let’s chat: [email protected]
