Welcome to the early August edition of Pitch and Run!

Everyone expected summer to tap the brakes. It didn’t. Q2 finished as the second-largest funding quarter on record globally and H1 2026 came in at $510B in total VC a new all-time high for any half year. The barbell is not softening; it’s sharpening. AI infrastructure and agentic workflow platforms are pulling the biggest checks. Early-stage founders with sharp positioning and real traction are still getting backed fast. The compressed middle Series B and C for companies that aren’t clearly infrastructure relevant or AI native is the hard place to be right now.

The Window is Open But It Rewards Staying Specific

Q3 opens with the same pressure it always has: the investors who were "quiet in summer" are already back in their inboxes. Are you ready?

AI Funding Is Concentrated, and That's Not an Accident
Foundational AI funding effectively doubled in early 2026 compared to all of last year, but the money is clustering hard around a handful of frontier labs. If you're not OpenAI, Anthropic, or xAI, the lesson isn't "AI is dead capital" it's that generic AI positioning gets ignored. Investors want products that embed into workflows and become hard to remove, not another wrapper pitch.

Defense and Edge AI Are Quietly Absorbing Massive Checks
Anduril has raised over $11 billion across eleven rounds, including a $5 billion Series H in May, and autonomous driving platform Wayve pulled in a $1.2 billion Series D. Defense tech, sovereign infrastructure, and embodied AI are no longer niche categories they're where some of the largest, least-hyped rounds are landing. Worth watching if you're anywhere near dual-use, robotics, or hard infrastructure.

Fintech's Comeback Is Real, and It's Not Just AI-Flavored
FinTech investment hit $2.03 billion in a single week in late July, with cybersecurity, alternative lending, and asset-based financing all pulling serious rounds. Stablecoins, cross-border payments, and compliance tooling continue to be the categories where "boring but painful" workflows turn into real checks. Consumer fintech apps without retention numbers are still stuck.

The honest close: August is your last real window to sharpen your story before September calendars explode again. If you can't clearly answer "what workflow do we own" and "how does that show up in the numbers," use the next four weeks to fix that. The pavement is where you figure it out before you walk into any room.

🌍 Global Context: The Barbell Market and Where You Fit

The Barbell Effect Is at Its Most Extreme
Record funding levels mask a deeply bifurcated landscape. At the top, mega rounds for frontier AI, defense, and infrastructure keep landing. At the bottom, early-stage is still active for founders with sharp stories and real traction. The middle Series B and C for companies that aren't AI-native or infrastructure relevant is where it gets genuinely painful. That's not changing before fall.

Outside Silicon Valley, the Door Is Actually Open
Global founders especially outside the Bay Area have more room to compete right now if they show crisp storytelling, clean legal hygiene, and strong operating proof. NYC's density, Boston's biotech depth, and the broader Northeast corridor remain some of the most active ecosystems on the planet. The miles you put in here compound differently.

Liquidity Pressure Is Now Baseline Operating Reality
LPs have been waiting years for distributions, and that pressure is reshaping how funds deploy  fewer bets, more conviction, faster decisions on the ones that fit, and a much sharper focus on M&A and secondary exits instead of just markups. For founders, the pitch has to be tight and the category has to be obvious. If an investor can't quickly explain why you win, you're not getting the check.

Deborah Bussière kept watching the same problem play out across healthcare patients who had no real ownership over their own health information, scattered across providers and systems never built to talk to each other. The population is aging fast, chronic illness is showing up earlier, and the infrastructure hasn't caught up. So she built healthpass1 a privacy-first, user-controlled health data platform that puts ownership back with consumers.

The timing lines up. OpenAI and Google leaning hard into health right now signals something fundamental is shifting. healthpass1 is patent pending, closing in on a working beta in two weeks, and raising $1.5M on a $6M valuation cap with a close expected in the next few weeks. Since opening the round in mid-May: six investors in, three more in active talks (including a potential VC), and two Fortune 500 companies plus one amateur sports entity working through Letters of Intent as early clients.

"We believe people deserve more control over their health data and care" is the line the team keeps coming back to backed by two world class surgeons and a former healthcare network COO on the Advisory Board, plus a cold inbound from an investment banker asking to introduce clients who need exactly this.

healthpass1 has also partnered with Virtual Force to build the app MVP development across iOS and Android, agile approach, scalable and user-friendly.
